Safest Cities for New Families

It can be a little intimidating when you’re looking for a safe place for your family to reside for the foreseeable future.

You want a place that has a good education system, cheap housing, and most importantly is a safe place to live with relatively low crime rates.

There are so many cities in America, so which ones are the safest for families?

Of course, it’s generally well known which cities are the most dangerous, but the safer cities are talked about a lot less.

Here’s a good place to start if you’re trying to find the safest cities in America.

Top 5 Safest Metro Cities for Families in America

It can be a difficult task to say which cities are the safest in America simply because the population changes so much from city to city.

Cities with a larger population would naturally have more crime simply because there are more people in them.

This list is based on metro cities with a population of 300,000 or more.

The safety of these metro cities were based on a couple of different factors.

For the most part, the safety was based on the number of reported violent crimes. The reported amount of property ties is factored in if there was a tie between cities.

The crime rate was calculated per 1,000 people for each city.

The crime rates are based on FBI crime reports.

1. Virginia Beach, Virginia

However, Virginia Beach did have 2 mass shootings in 2018. This did not affect the score since it’s based on numbers from 2017 which is from the last available FBI reports. That means that in the future, Virginia Beach may not be the safest metro city in America.

Future reports will display how these mass shootings affect the overall safety of Virginia Beach.

2. Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu’s violent crime rate went down almost one whole point from 2016 to 2017!

It may be surprising to note that the biggest safety issue in Honolulu is pedestrian safety, not violent crimes.

Honolulu is currently working on making their city a safer place for pedestrians.

3. Lexington, Kentucky

The Lexington Police Department has been working on lowering the crime rates by creating public safety task forces and holding neighborhood meetings to try to get the crime rate back down. According to the police department, it’s working!

4. Anaheim, California

California is home to some of the safest and most dangerous cities in America. This is largely due to the state’s size. Anaheim is on the most safe list and Oakland is on the most dangerous list.

There are some big differences within those two cities that may be the cause of the vast difference in crime rates.

Anaheim has created an initiative called City of Kindness that puts an emphasis on community engagement.

5. San Diego, California

San Diego is home to 1,424,116 people so it’s impressive that it made the safest cities list at all! It can be hard to keep crime rates low with so many people living in one area!

That might seem like it’s on the higher end but is pretty good for that many people!

Top 5 Safest Cities in America Overall

This is a different list that includes cities that are below the 300,000 population limit.

Each city was assigned a safe city score that was based on a few different things. Categories like violent crime rates, property crime rates, percent of households that classify as families, were given a weight of 15%. (10)

Other categories like employment rate, commute time, and high school graduation rates were given a rate of 10%. (11)

Percent of children in nursery or preschool and percent of population in college as an undergraduate were given a weight of 5%. (12)

These were all used to calculate the overall Family Safe City Score for each city.

1. Logan, Utah

Logan holds the title as the safest city in America for families.

2. State College, Pennsylvania

State College is home to Penn State where the city got its name. It has a family safe city score of 2184.9 which is just slightly lower than Logan.

3. Provo, Utah

Provo is the third largest city in Utah and it has been known to have low crime rates for quite some time. Provo was voted the “Best Small and Medium-Size Cities for Jobs” by Forbes.

4. Harrisonburg, Virginia

Not only has Harrisonburg shown to be safe for families but for refugees as well. Approximately 1,900 refugees have settled there since 2002.

5. Midland, Michigan

Midland was named one of the best small cities in America to raise a family in by Forbes in 2010.

Other Factors to Consider

Although safety is always #1, there are other factors you should consider when choosing a city to live in.

Things like the cost of food and housing should be considered. There are more expensive places to live where rent might be out of your budget.

Consider how much taxes will cost you when you move. Some states have low prices for housing but extremely high property taxes.

Other states don’t collect taxes on retail services or individual income taxes.

Job Opportunities

What’s the job market like where you want to live? Is there a large demand for your profession?

Answering these questions will help you weigh your options before you decide to move somewhere.

Do you like the heat? Perhaps you prefer the cold?

Think about the dangers of earthquakes, hurricanes, or tornadoes where you’re considering moving as well.

Education System

You’ll want to pay extra close attention to this if you have kids.

What are the schools like? Do they have high rankings? Are they safe?

The last thing you’d want is to move somewhere only to feel uncomfortable with your kids going to school.

Bottom Line

Choosing somewhere to live is overwhelming. There are many factors that might affect your decision.

However, the safety of a city should be very high on your list of things to think about. Hopefully this list helped.

Wherever you end up, hopefully you have a happy life that’s full of memories in your new home!
